Learn to Crochet Granny Squares

Carcoar Primary SchoolFor those young and old wanting to expand their skill set in needlecraft, crocheting is perfect for you. We will go through basic techniques that can get you started on any beginner or novice project. Starting with the granny square is a great technique not only to learn but you can always continue the granny square to make it into a granny square blanket! (Which is a staple in any crafters home). This workshop will also cover colour changes and UK vs US terminology.

Learn to Spin on a Spindle

Venue TBADo you love fibre crafts, yarn and all things fluffy? Spinning might just be calling to you! With just one simple tool - the spindle - and the desire to create, you can become part of this most ancient of crafts.
In this workshop you'll learn the basics of spinning on a drop spindle, with experienced and enthusiastic spinner Francie Goudie. You'll come away with your own skein of yarn and the knowledge you need to keep exploring. This is the perfect workshop for anyone looking to learn to spin, or wanting to brush up on the basics.
NB: Bring your own spindle, or purchase a kit on the day for $30

Introduction to Fair Isle

This fun two-hour class will give you all the skills you need to knit your own Fair Isle project from the many traditional and modern patterns available. We will examine a variety of stranded colourwork examples. You will receive extensive class notes and learn how to knit with one yarn in each hand or both yarns in your preferred hand. You will learn how to organise your yarns so they never get tangled, and how to make the pattern stand out consistently from the background. You will also learn how to trap floats on the back of your work....

The Judges Room, Carcoar CourthouseThis workshop is for people who already know how to knit but are interested in the continental style of knitting, with the yarn tensioned on the left hand’s index finger. You will learn two different ways to purl and how they can help you become a faster, more efficient knitter.
Attention will also be given to ‘reading’ the fabric as that is a valuable tool in understanding different stitch patterns.

Learn to Steek Your Fair Isle Knitting

Judges Room, Carcoar CourthouseIf you love knitting stranded colourwork (fair isle) and want to move beyond hats, cowls and circular yoke jumpers, here is your chance to learn how to steek your knitting – to cut it open along special panels which you add while you knit. You will learn how to stabilise the panel and cut it open, and how to pick up stitches to knit front bands or sleeves.
Upon registration you will receive a two-page handout with instructions on how to knit your own sample piece with two steeking panels for us to work in class. All the other materials needed for the class are also noted. The pre-work is essential for this class.
By the end of the class, you will have a variety of new skills which will enable you to tackle any colourwork project with confidence.

Fill a basket with a few favourite skeins in the same ply and Robynn will lead you on a design journey using your choice of fibre, CO and BO, pattern, colour selection, size and technique. Be prepared to sketch your ideas, stretch your skills, talk about gauge, ply, tension, colour matching and design variables, while incorporating design ideas from Robynn-El’s original cowls as inspiration. Plan to have your unique cowl designed and underway by the end of the session, with detailed ideas for your next one.

This workshop will provide you with knowledge and skills to navigate the colour journey - starting with developing an understanding the colour possibilities in fibre - then planning the yarn you want to spin, with or without a project in mind - and finally exploring the techniques that allow you to spin that yarn, including chain plying, fractal spinning, gradient spinning, variegate spinning, matching plies and more...
