For those young and old wanting to expand their skill set in needlecraft, crocheting is perfect for you. We will go through basic techniques that can get you started on any beginner or novice project. Starting with the granny square is a great technique not only to learn but you can always continue the granny square to make it into a granny square blanket! (Which is a staple in any crafters home). This workshop will also cover colour changes and UK vs US terminology.

Do you love fibre crafts, yarn and all things fluffy? Spinning might just be calling to you! With just one simple tool - the spindle - and the desire to create, you can become part of this most ancient of crafts. 

In this workshop you'll learn the basics of spinning on a drop spindle, with experienced and enthusiastic spinner Francie Goudie. You'll come away with your own skein of yarn and the knowledge you need to keep exploring. This is the perfect workshop for anyone looking to learn to spin, or wanting to brush up on the basics.

This fun two-hour class will give you all the skills you need to knit your own Fair Isle project from the many traditional and modern patterns available. We will examine a variety of stranded colourwork examples. You will receive extensive class notes and learn how to knit with one yarn in each hand or both yarns in your preferred hand. You will learn how to organise your yarns so they never get tangled, and how to make the pattern stand out consistently from the background. This workshop is for people who already know how to knit but are interested in the continental style of knitting, with the yarn tensioned on the left hand’s index finger. You will learn two different ways to purl and how they can help you become a faster, more efficient knitter.

Attention will also be given to ‘reading’ the fabric as that is a valuable tool in understanding different stitch patterns.

Bobbin lace is a wonderful old craft that seems to have started in England and the Continent and is still being made around the world. Traditionally it was made with very fine threads and often on roller pillows. Mostly made by women. Today many different threads are used including wool.

Your class will be in either 4 ply wool or Perle Cotton and supplied with your pattern. Your bobbins will have been wound to save time.

Would you like to extend your colourwork knitting skills and look really clever by bringing embellishment and pattern to your fabric? Slip stitch knitting is easier to work than fair isle and gives the impression that you have handled 2 colours per row. Robynn will explain mosaic, honeycomb and textured patterns and provide comprehensive notes and designs from her research to set you up for slip stitch success from the very beginning.

If you love knitting stranded colourwork (fair isle) and want to move beyond hats, cowls and circular yoke jumpers, here is your chance to learn how to steek your knitting – to cut it open along special panels which you add while you knit. You will learn how to stabilise the panel and cut it open, and how to pick up stitches to knit front bands or sleeves.

Upon registration you will receive a two-page handout with instructions on how to knit your own sample piece with two steeking panels for us to work in class. All the other materials needed for the class are also noted. The pre-work is essential for this class.

By the end of the class, you will have a variety of new skills which will enable you to tackle any colourwork project with confidence.

This Cast On, Bind Off workshop centres around the modern choices available to start and end your garment professionally so it is ‘fit for purpose’. Robynn will tell you of some disasters along her knitting journey and how a little knowledge and effort put her knitting on a higher level to gain personal satisfaction and competition ribbons.

Resources and equipment will be discussed, samples displayed, handouts distributed and students will execute a few cast on and bind off techniques together with the tutor for guidance.
