Introduction to Fair Isle
Saturday, 5 April 2025
10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Carcoar Primary School
Would you like to learn to knit with two colours at the same time? This fun two-hour class will give you all the skills you need to knit your own Fair Isle project from the many traditional and modern patterns available. We will examine a variety of stranded colourwork examples. You will receive extensive class notes and learn how to knit with one yarn in each hand or both yarns in your preferred hand. You will learn how to organise your yarns so they never get tangled, and how to make the pattern stand out consistently from the background. You will also learn how to trap floats on the back of your work. My goal is that you will receive a solid grounding in class and have ongoing support both in the class notes and the recommended videos to reinforce what you learn. Whilst you can work Fair Isle designs with both colours in the same hand, holding one colour in each hand is truly a game changer! So take the opportunity to learn to knit with the other hand (purling not required) before April and come and join me for this fabulous class!
Please bring along:
• Two colours of 8 ply wool, not superwash, one colour significantly darker than the other.
• One short circular needle, or two double pointed needles (DPNs), a little larger than you would normally use. Please note that needles with end stoppers are not suitable for this class.

Two Colour Brioche
Saturday, 5 April 2025
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Carcoar Primary School
Would you like to learn how to create beautiful two-colour brioche knitting? This class will teach you how, starting with the basics - brioche knit and brioche purl - and then moving on to learn the four-part dance that creates this fabulous two colour, double sided fabric. We can then experiment with increases, decreases, and repairing a dropped stitch if desired. The class notes include detailed instructions, step-by-step photos, and video references for you to continue to learn after the class.
What to bring:
• Two colours of strongly contrasting 8 ply (DK) yarn, one light and one dark.
• One short circular needle or two double pointed needles. Single point needles with knobs are not suitable for this class. Choose the size you would normally use to work ribbing with your yarn.

Learn to Steek Your Fair Isle Knitting
Sunday, 6 April 2026
10:00 am – 12:00 noon
Judges Room, Carcoar Courthouse
If you love knitting stranded colourwork (fair isle) and want to move beyond hats, cowls and circular yoke jumpers, here is your chance to learn how to steek your knitting – to cut it open along special panels which you add while you knit. You will learn how to stabilise the panel and cut it open, and how to pick up stitches to knit front bands or sleeves.
Upon registration you will receive a two-page handout with instructions on how to knit your own sample piece with two steeking panels for us to work in class. All the other materials needed for the class are also noted. The pre-work is essential for this class.
By the end of the class, you will have a variety of new skills which will enable you to tackle any colourwork project with confidence.
